Insightful Psychometric Testing from Harrison Assessment Tools

“Can a blog post about psychometric testing be interesting?” I asked myself before starting this piece. I’ve been singing the praises of Harrison Assessment Tools (HATS) to anyone who will listen, until a colleague suggested I put my thoughts in writing. So here goes… the following shares my experience of using HATS and why this tool stands out from the rest.

Over the years I’ve used a number of different psychometric testing tools, both in my role as a life coach and as a recruiter. Since I started using Harrison Assessment Tools I have been extremely impressed and excited by the insights the results produce.

Why Use Psychometric Testing?

Psychometric testing, when used correctly, is a powerful tool for recruitment, career and personal development. I use it for coaching both in companies and on a 1:1 basis. This includes performance and talent management, career progression and personal development.

Typically psychometric testing takes the form of a questionnaire designed to measure specific traits. Some testing is no more insightful than those fun quizzes you see friends sharing on Facebook: apps like “What’s my mental age” or “Right / Left Brained Tests”. Powerful testing and assessments deliver a lot more than this; identifying key traits that can hold an individual back, and unlocking strengths that my clients may not have known they possess.

Why I’m So Excited about Harrison Assessment Tools

The resources Harrison Assessments devotes to continued research, development and user experience is why their assessments are so effective. HATS measures 176 traits including:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Attitudes
  • Motivators

Resulting in a much deeper insight into an individual’s specific behaviours, traits and motivations than any other assessment tool I’ve used.  For me professionally this means I can take coaching onto another level, quickly gaining trust and rapport, and really understanding my client’s motivators.

How Do I Use Psychometric Testing and HATS

I see a wide range of individuals in my role as a life coach. From teenagers making career choices at a critical time in the lives, to CEOs faced with challenging decisions about their professional direction.

HATS is a brilliant tool for identifying those key traits and helping my clients open up to me. Without tools like this, it would take much longer to uncover these traits, time and money, before I’m in a position to coach my clients in a constructive and insightful way. HATS is a powerful and exciting tool that creates an opening for dialogue between client and coach which is totally unique.

HATS for Students and Graduates

You’re never too young to take a psychometric test! School students looking to identify their strengths and weaknesses when making subject choices for GCSE or A ‘level can benefit hugely from HATS together with coaching.

HATS for Personal Development

Understanding how your relationships are affected by key character traits can enable an individual to work on these in a more positive way. Discovering strengths that you didn’t know you had, can be empowering and motivating helping an individual work through their angst.

Whatever your plan no doubt there will have been obstacles, and opportunities, that may have derailed your original ideas. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps you have taken a different direction than anticipated but ended up in a much better place. That said assessment is a valuable exercise to do at key points throughout your career. Your goals and circumstances change throughout your journey; and HATS coupled with coaching can really help you understand what you want from your career.

Psychometric testing is closely associated with recruitment and HR. I use it in conjunction with companies to identify their employee’s strengths and key attributes that will enable the success of the whole company, as well as the individual.
